MASTHEAD CHANGE AT THE WALRUS
Toronto, February 12, 2004 - For health reasons, David Berlin is stepping down as editor-in-chief of The Walrus, a new monthly general-interest magazine based in Toronto. Mr. Berlin founded
The Walrus last year with his publishing partner, Ken Alexander, and has been instrumental in its early success. He will continue to be directly associated with the magazine as a contributing editor and writer, and he will remain on the masthead as the founding editor. Paul Wilson, previously a deputy editor of
The Walrus, succeeds Mr. Berlin as editor-in-chief.
“Without question, David has been the driving editorial force behind
The Walrus,” the publisher, Ken Alexander, said. “He brings smart and elevated ideas by the bucketful, and I am thrilled that he will continue to share his story ideas with the magazine and will write numerous features for us.”
Mr. Berlin’s successor, Paul Wilson, has a broad experience in radio, newspaper, and magazine journalism, most recently as Review editor of the
National Post, and a senior editor of Saturday Night (from 1998–2001).
“The Walrus is, and will remain, a monument to David Berlin’s vision,” Mr. Wilson said. “In the many years of our friendship and collaboration on writing projects, we have shared a love of magazines and appreciation for their importance in public discourse. David has an abundance of both chutzpah and entrepreneurial smarts, qualities you need to give birth to a magazine as ambitious as
The Walrus. Our start-up phase has been phenomenally successful and the entire staff is determined to ensure that this success will continue.”
